Yes, I experienced my first Eurovision yesterday. CNN has a good article about the Finns winning the this year’s contest despite some perhaps political voting. Firstly, if you’re from the States, Eurovision doesn’t mean anything. It’s an annual song contest with an entry from each European country. You could sum up 90% of the entries as corny, feel-good pop that probably doesn’t have its target marketing audience set at 18-25. This year was no different…except… Lordi, the Finnish monster band (think GWAR), took the prize with a record breaking 292 points.
About 20 minutes after disappearing upstairs, the Finns came back with a victory banner…
Here’s the winning performance!
One last absurdity… Germany’s entry was a country-pop band called Texas Lightning whose lead singer is Australian. (although…the song is quite catchy)
